What a week we had leading up to Mother's Day. We had the pleasure of visiting and touring the Heritage Collection with 98 year old Mrs. Evelyn Williams James, daughter of Birdie L. Brookins and Willis H. Williams, a pioneer Winter Park family. Evelyn grew up @ 314 Penn. Avenue in Winter Park's Hannibal Square community. Frank R. Isreal one of the first Black Councilmen was her neighbor. During the visit Evelyn fondly remembered Mr. Isreal's daughter and granddaughter, Frankie and Elsie.

Evelyn was born in Jacksonville, Florida and moved to Hanniibal Square in the early 1900's. Evelyn and Lee Ball were parents to Willis Ball who was born in Winter Park. Willis attended Welbourne Avenue Nursery & Kindergarten and Hannibal Square Elementary. He was the first African- American graduate of Western Washington University, Bellingham WA. Willis died in 1987 and in 1992 the family established a memorial scholarship at the University.

Evelyn married Samuel James in 1938 and by 1942 the family was living in Washington State. Samuel died in 2006. Evelyn currently resides with her daughter and son-inlaw in Seattle WA.

In addition to Evelyn our special guests included Mrs. Sereatha Ball Carter, Mexyce Roberts Ray, Rose Charlton Bynum, Sandra James Campbell and Willis Campbell (daughter & son-in-law), Marva Hope Carter and Jessica Stinson. Guests talked about the good old days and their educational, christian and social experiences growing up in Winter Park, Florida.

Evelyn her daugher and son-in law, Sandra and Willis and her cousin Rose C. Bynum toured the Heritage Center Collection. The collection brought back many fond memories of Winter Park to Evelyn, especially the picture to the Straughter Home where she and Samuel lived when they first married. She also fondly remembered Washington and Edith Straughter the homeowners who spent a lot of time with little Willis Ball. Mary Daniels, Docent photographed the visit.

Afterwards Evelyn joined Heritage Center Manager Fairolyn H. Livingston on a riding tour of Hannibal Square including her old homestead, Ward Chapel and Mt. Moriah Churches, Welbourne Avenue Nursery & Kindergarten where son Willis Ball attended and the former property owned by her mother-in-law, Mrs. Josephine Perry.

On Monday May 9, 2011, Peter Schreyer, founder of the Heritage Center and Executive Director of Crealde School of Art and Barbara Chandler, Assistant Manager of the Heritage Center did a photo shoot of Evelyn and her family at the home church, Ward Chapel African Methodist Episcopal, Winter Park, Florida to include in our collection. The family also loaned personal photographs and narrative for the collection.

It was awesome!!!! Fairolyn

Happy Holidays

Happy Holidays To All:

The Heritage Center is a busy place. We had two workshops - one in September 2009, and another October, 2009. In the former, Linda Schapper, Central Florida Folk Artist, conducted a 4 hour workshop for 16 participants from Hannibal Square and the surrounding communities. The paintings are on display in the downstairs classroom at the Heritage Center. A Guild for those interested in pursuing other art projects is planned.

From October 31, - November 7, 2009, Lauren Austin, internationally known quilter conducted a quilting workshop for over 35 current and former Hannibal Square residents. The quilts will be part of an exhibit starting in January 2010.

In November 2009, Heritage Center staff and volunteers participated in Orange County Public Schools, Teach-in at Cherokee School, Orlando, Fl. Over 30 students and staff attended. It was a very rewarding experience.

On December 3, 2009, 18 third grade gifted students, their teacher and 4 parents participated in our school field trip - extended learning opportunity program. Heritage Center staff, Fairolyn, Faith, Grace, and Linda, conducted a tour of the Mosiac, Memory Wall, Heritage Collection, and current exhibit in the upstairs gallery. The artist, Linda Schapper, worked with the students on a hands on project based on discussions of tradition, culture, and heritage. Students took the art work back to school.

Our current exhibit runs thru December 19, 2009. Linda Schapper: Central Florida Art Painter of Historic and Sacred Scenes is mostly recognized for her "Family of Christ" tapestry - an enormous patchwork of human figures encircling Jesus on the cross. The tapestry became the backdrop for Pope John Paul ll's landmark October 1995 mass in New York's Central Park. Linda's "Nativity ll" became the 1998 UNICEF Christmas Card.

Have a wonderful holiday with those you love and respect,

Fairolyn

A fun timewas had by all!!

Who is Candace S. Matthews? She is the 2009, Black Enterprise Corporate Executive of The Year. Candace S. Matthews is Amway's Global Chief Marketing Officer. Candace photo graces the cover of the September 2009, issue of Black Enterprise Magazine. Candace and her husband are proud parents of 4 children (three foster children and one neice). The family resides in Ada, MI.

She a member of the Executive Leadership Council; Board member of Stanford University Graduate School of Business Advisory Council, the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, Cosmetic Executive Women, and Figure Skating in Harlem.

The best is yet to come! Candace' father, Eugene Joseph Sheffield once pastored one of the churches in Hannibal Square. She shared that every summer they drove from Penn and summered in Winter Park. I presented Candace copies of the Sheffield family pedigree research from the Family History Center here at the Heritage Center. She was estatic as she read the names of her father and older siblings. She shared pictures of her oldest sister, May and her father as a young minister.

The Heritage Center staff extended an invitation for Mrs. Matthews to attend and hold a place of honor in the 2010 Unity Festival.

If you know or have any information about the church where Reverend Sheffield served or have any pictures please share them with us for our collection. Reverend and older members of his family are listed as living in Winter Park, Fl, Orange County on the 1930 U.S. Census when he was 28 years old.

Thanks,
