Happy Holidays

Happy Holidays To All:

The Heritage Center is a busy place. We had two workshops - one in September 2009, and another October, 2009. In the former, Linda Schapper, Central Florida Folk Artist, conducted a 4 hour workshop for 16 participants from Hannibal Square and the surrounding communities. The paintings are on display in the downstairs classroom at the Heritage Center. A Guild for those interested in pursuing other art projects is planned.

From October 31, - November 7, 2009, Lauren Austin, internationally known quilter conducted a quilting workshop for over 35 current and former Hannibal Square residents. The quilts will be part of an exhibit starting in January 2010.

In November 2009, Heritage Center staff and volunteers participated in Orange County Public Schools, Teach-in at Cherokee School, Orlando, Fl. Over 30 students and staff attended. It was a very rewarding experience.

On December 3, 2009, 18 third grade gifted students, their teacher and 4 parents participated in our school field trip - extended learning opportunity program. Heritage Center staff, Fairolyn, Faith, Grace, and Linda, conducted a tour of the Mosiac, Memory Wall, Heritage Collection, and current exhibit in the upstairs gallery. The artist, Linda Schapper, worked with the students on a hands on project based on discussions of tradition, culture, and heritage. Students took the art work back to school.

Our current exhibit runs thru December 19, 2009. Linda Schapper: Central Florida Art Painter of Historic and Sacred Scenes is mostly recognized for her "Family of Christ" tapestry - an enormous patchwork of human figures encircling Jesus on the cross. The tapestry became the backdrop for Pope John Paul ll's landmark October 1995 mass in New York's Central Park. Linda's "Nativity ll" became the 1998 UNICEF Christmas Card.

Have a wonderful holiday with those you love and respect,

Fairolyn
